The virus that shocked the world for shrinking babies’ brains is slowly spreading throughout the world. Though babies and pregnant women are the most affected by the virus, many adults have apparently contracted the said disease. The Zika virus was first discovered in Africa in 1947, which is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is also famous for carrying deadly viruses like dengue, yellow fever and Chikungunya. Today, thousands of babies and adults have contracted the said disease.
While it is a known fact that the Zika virus can be contracted through mosquito bites, a case in the US reveals that the virus was sexually transmitted. Back in 2008, a man who travelled to Dallas from Venezuela contracted the disease. It was then passed on to his wife, but not to their four children were safe and were not infected. In 2013, French scientists also found viable Zika virus in a 44-year-old Tahitian man’s semen samples long after the virus disappeared from his blood, strengthening the possibility of transmission via sex. People who have recently travelled to Zika-prone areas are advised to abstain from sexual activities.
